It sounds like cradle cap. Does it look scaly? You can get stuff for it at the store. Or before bath rub head with baby oil to help soften it. Then use fine toothed comb to comb through it -- It does not hurt or itch, just looks bad. Stuff you can buy works well, but we always used the baby oil method either with comb or rub with washcloth at bath time to get most of it off.

For OTC cream, try Eucerin. You can get it at Walmart and it comes in a baby form. Great lotion and used a lot with adults with exczema etc.
Reply:Did the Dr. say it was cradle cap? If so, you can use an otc ointment from a health food store. It only contains natural ingredients and is gentle for the baby's skin. I would also suggest getting a baby tooth brush and trying to use that with baby shampoo to scrub it off. I know that sounds harsh, but the peeling skin will be gently exfoliated.
Reply:my son has always had this problem...while he is sleeping rub aquaphor on it (it looks like jelly, is in a tube in the medicine aisle).
Reply:my daughter had the same problem and i just stopped using the 2 in 1 shampoo and body soap from j%26amp;j and started using there regular shampoo

also try using regular baby lotion or the stuff made for exzema for babys
Reply:is it craddle cap? my son had craddle cap and his doctor told me to use baby oil and rub it in then let it sit on there for a minute and then use a soft toothbrush. It worked really good
Reply:It is dry skin mainly called cradle cap....I work with dermatologists and they say to try baby oil after washing the baby and then gently comb it off.

They also say you can also try dandruff shampoo...it will not harm the baby as I have used it myself...just be very sure to keep it out of your babies eyes.

I tend to just wash and then comb it out after the bath. It took my nephew almost a year and a half to get rid of all of his...we just continued to comb his out at different times.
Reply:Here are a few tricks to help that skin not be so dry all the time.

keep using the 1% until you see a doctor, who can perscribe a stronger cream.

no hot baths. Luke warm or even a little colder than that, and NOT every day. Every third day is best(use a wet rag to sponge bath him on the off days, not baby wipes)

Right out of the water apply the cream where ever he is most itchy, or all over, then every three or four hours. Don't miss a beat on this, if you can help it.

This could be cradle cap or a mild exzema. Cradles cap will resolve.. Exzema starts to show up on his cheeks, legs and arms by age 6mo.

Hope this helps!
Reply:nope very common. Use baby oil or vaseline on his head. His hair will look greasy but so what. If you do this for a few days and gently comb your babys head it will clear right up. Maybe a little longer but just keep using the bo or vas and comb. Just dont over comb. A little bit at a time a couple times a day. I always liked baby magic products. Wash your babies head with soap only once a week or so. Soaps dry out skin.
Reply:It simply amazes me the number of people who suggest baby oil or vaseline....even some doctors. Both are petroleum products and I advise you to research the potential hazards of using petroleum on your little one. Petroleum products contain carcenogens (cancer causing agents)

Plus....it's a non renewable resource. Save the earth....use a product with a natural oil base and not one chemically or synthetically derived.
Reply:It could be cradle cap - maybe. Your doctor should have recognised it if it was. Just incase it is put some olive oil on your babys head about an hour before bathtime. Be generous with it :) wash it out with baby shampoo and dry the hair. If its really bad put some baby oil on overnight and wash out in the next bath. Kepp trying the olive oil, it might take a week but it works. My 2 sons had it quite bad but it gies away. I know the doctors say not to pick it but I put a bit of sorbolene cream on it one morning and while i was breastfeeding later in the day i picked off some of it. After a few days it was completely gone. Good luck
